It was a good sociable event at the Six Bells at Newdigate - a really good evening out and fortunately you didn't need to be too expert at the game of skittles (that would have ruled most of us out). Skittles was the main draw of the evening but it was accompanied by good meal together with some good drinks. The picture on the left is as Lisa takes a turn at the skittles.
It was well attended with a good mix of Downsmen and friends - enough to divide up into two teams to undertake the serious business of knocking down the skittles. There were rules but the main idea was to hit the nine skittles with three attempts at each turn. It looked easy but was nothing like it in practice.
There were tactics or were they really tactics? Some bounced the balls down, some rolled them gently, some at vicious speed. It all made no difference – the ball flew down neatly through everything without touching a thing. Sometime a wild cheer broke the air as skittles went flying. There was embarrassment as nothing went down at all but it was all in the game and made a good evening out.
The evening ended with Lisa leading the barbershop singing to the delight of the whole pub.
