A Great Show at Leatherhead Theatre

It was a perfect Sunday afternoon at Leatherhead Theatre when a good audience was thoroughly entertained by the Downsmen, the barbershop group. It was in the mezzanine bar area and over fifty came to hear the wonderful harmony of the voices and some marvellous unaccompanied singing. The songs brought back so many happy memories with Beatles numbers such as 'Yesterday' and many others. Some were brought to life, for example, 'Macnamara's Band' as the chorus accompanied the singing with extravagent imaginary instruments.

There were two solos, Allan Scott and his delightful songs to the guitar and Graham Davies a marvellous solo on the clarinet. Even the audience joined in the chorus of one of the numbers after a short but amusing rehearsal of the words lead by Derek Blewitt. Derek very amusingly introduced the numbers with lively interchange with Eileen Mason who directed the chorus. Eileen herself joined in the action at one stage doing a very graceful dance to the applause of the audience.

During the short interval tea and cakes were served by the theatre staff while the chorus intermingled with the assembly. Altogether it was delightful and thoroughly enjoyable occasion.
