A Free ‘Learn to Sing in Harmony' Course

The Downsmen are running a 6-week ‘Learn to Sing in Harmony' course at our base in the Methodist Church in Leatherhead every Wednesday from 3 rrd February. The action starts at 7.30pm and during the evening we hope to be giving a batch of recruits an idea of how to sing in four-part harmony. As well as sheet music, teach CDs will be supplied to help learn the relevant parts by ear. The course will also cover breath control, pitch and presentation so that those taking part will be able to perform to family and friends at a final, informal session.

Why are we doing this? Well, apart from the fact that we think singing is a great hobby and want to get more men involved, we need to mount a recruitment drive. That isn't to say that we don't attract, and accept, singers as and when they make contact. We do, and have been pleased to welcome two new members in the latter part of 2009. However, as with any club, people resign for various reasons, and therefore we need to make a concerted effort to replace them and increase our numbers.

In the past we have found that a free singing course acts as an incentive for men to come and try out our brand of close harmony without any commitment. If they like the barbershop style they stay. If not, then we hope they go and try one of the many choirs or choral societies in the area.

Posters and notices are being put up in libraries, Post Offices and newsagents' windows in order to interest as many men as possible. Our plan was to do a few outdoor sing-outs in town centres and shopping malls, but the weather has put that part of the promotion in jeopardy. Should it improve then we hope to be in Leatherhead on Saturday 23 rd January and the Ashley Centre, Epsom on 30 th January. If anyone reading this is interested, or knows a man or two who might like to take part, then please ring John Friend on 01372 459312 for a set of joining instructions.
